I haven't been able to use the update from within the control panel for a while now. It throws errors for many files and stops.

To update, I've been downloading the .tgz file, putting it into the inbox and running it from there. that seems to work.

The download of the .tgz file into inbox/yacs is the right way to go for the 8.6.

What kind of error have you encountered afterwards?

Had to download the latest update as well, it ran into an error.

As far as I know I have no unusual permission settings.

I did at one point set the entire directory to 777 -- that did not work either.
