Images and poll permalinks

timster -- le 21 mar. 2005
Yacs fan!

not showing?

Bernard,

I was noticing that when you click the permalink on the polls it shows the poll results but not the options to vote or the images set with the entry?

Is there anway that those can appear also?

Tim P.S. I was wondering what you do for your day job?

Timster: thumbnails are supposed to appear in list of articles, while icons appear at permalinks.

Usually in your case, I upload a quite large image, and select to use it as a page icon. Then I check the permalink page.

To use it as a thumbnail as well, hit the 'Edit' link. Look at images below the form. Next to the target image, click on 'Set as page thumbnail'. The permalink is displayed again. Towards the top of the page, click on the link to the section page to list pages, and to check that the thumbnail appears correctly. In this case YACS uses a small-size thumbnail built after the icon upload.

Of course, you can do it the other way around, post an image to be used as the thumbnail, then edit the page to set the same image as the page icon. In this case both images may have the same size.

Re:PS: Yes, I am still thinking about it. Thank you again for your input.

Bernard:

It would save a ton of time when adding images if you could select the 'set as thumbnail' AND 'set as icon' options at the same time. Is that possible? ::)

Otherwise your work-around does the job, on my front page of my site the thumbnail always shows if you choose both, which is what I need.

Thanks,

Tim

Timster: Thank you for the suggestion. I suppose I should add an option 'Set as both' to the posting form.

In this case:
- the original image would be used as the page icon
- the thumbnail image would be used as the page thumbnail

Ok with this feature description?

Bernard:

I think that would work for me... let me know when the changes are made and I'll upload and try it out.

Cheers,

Tim

Timster: Can you please check the last nightly build of YACS? Thank you for your feed-back.
timster - le 11 avr. 2005
Bernard:

I tried the new build and I find when I choose the:

Append the image, and also use it as thumbnail,

option in the poll advanced options editing for the images, it shows the image twice rather than in different positions relative to whether its viewed on the home page or from the permalink.

Timster: Hmmm, what about changing slightly different things:
- In the daily layout (targeting blogs) for the home page the icon image would be displayed instead of the thumbnail. This makes sense because most of the text is featured, like a the permalink.
- If you add an icon to a page, and if there is no thumbnail yet, a thumbnail will be automatically added silently. This makes sense because icons are most always quite large images, and they are representative of page content.
- If you append an image to the main part of the page, a thumbnail is not automatically added to the page, because you could have added a small bullet, or something that does not reflect the page main idea. But there is an option to force the creation of the thumbnail when this is adequate.

I will work on that as soon as you will provide your green light...

Bernard:

I'm not sure I follow entirely your train of thought, for my specific case (I don't know about the other Yacs users ) I need the thumbnail positioning for the daily view on my home page because it shows the image nicely with my poll (and again in my case 'with results') formatted nicely beside it. When I view the permalink the thumbnail image disappears (which is what I don't want), since I wish the formatting would remain the same as the home page.

I only use the 'set as page icon' positioning for my image choice when the image I want to use is too wide to allow the poll and results beside it to format properly. And then I just settle for the image being wide enough to cover accross my daily entry and have the poll and results show below it, which looks fine by me.

When I view the permalink from the entries that have images set as page icons the formatting remains the same so I am happy.

If you changes allow for this then I'm all for them.

" Also now all my images have disappeared... because of the change of the thumbnail positioning.

Now if i add a new post and add the image with the new option to append the image and use it as a thumbnail, the thumbnail position is not the same as before (to the left fo the poll reselts) but rather positions on the top of post in the append image position.

I need the thumbnail position (image align left) for the home page and the permalink.

Lastly if i choose just the thumbnail image by itself postion as I was previously doing, the image doesn't show up on the home page or the permalink... although if I tried to edit the blog entry the image shows up to be edited. "

Actually using the thumbnail image in the daily layout was a bug. The proper way to do things, and this is what has been implemented, is to have one main image(the icon) to be used at the permalink page, and at the home page as well. The thumbnail image is used in list of articles, for example at section index pages, or at themain index for new articles.

Also, I have taken into account the way you are publishing new polls to make it more easy than it was before.

All you need to do during the creation of a new poll is to add an icon to the page. Be sure to upload the image only once, and to select the option 'Set as page icon' only.

On upload, YACS will create an additional thumbnail image derived from the icon image.

As a result, YACS should display:
- at the home page, the icon image flowed to the left -- aside the poll
- at the permalink page, the icon image flowed to the right -- this can be changed in your skin template
- at a section index, the thumbnail image will be used
- at the main index for articles, thumbnail images are used as well

Images have disappeared because YACS now expects icons instead of thumbnails. To avoid the tedious process of changing every page, I have added to the last built a run once script to do that automatically. So please upgrade your server, and images should recover nicely.

By the way, I travelled for the last two weeks in China for business, and will be more available to you now that I'm back in France.

Have you updated you user profile accordingly? This would let more people call you.

Ifyou are logged in, visit my page to get an idea of what I mean.

Also, I have attempted to call you this morning (Paris time) but Skype told me you were not reachable.

Wouldyou be available some time this week to have an open discussion together?
timster - le 20 avr. 2005
Bernard:

I'm in Taipei and your in Paris, generally I only use skype when I'm at the office, and even then usually only the chat function.

Skype often shows people off-line when they are actually online so try to ping me anytime, and I'll try the same.

Cheers,

Tim

Timster: May I suggest you to slightly update the css file for the techcolosseum skin, in order to make icon images flow nicely on the right of permalink pages?

Use the attached css instead of yours.

Hope it helps...
timster - le 21 avr. 2005
Bernard:

The image positioning for the permalinks is much better now and looks great.

But especially in Firefox and slightly in IE, the poll graphic bars don't line up properly anymore

Tweak, tweak tweak. ::)
Bernard - le 26 avr. 2005
Timster: I have attached an updated css file for your site, that should improve on poll rendering.

Basically, YACS now uses the .poll style, and you can tweak the CSS depending on images you use for poll bars.
timster - le 27 avr. 2005
Bernard:

Thanks! Works like a charm.

The issue is to determine what to display as a permalink. I have selected to display poll results here.

Do you mean you would like to add a button to vote on the results page?
